They get here; first one, then the other, the usual flurry of text messages sent and received during the hour before, pinpointing time of arrival.
These are my girls, this our quarterly weekend together – time we fiercely protect, an engagement prioritised. It’s important. It keeps us together. We’ve been doing it for years.
When we meet, It’s not what happens that matters but the time we spend. Superficially it’s lunch, a walk, supper out in the evening. Beneath that lies the commitment, the loyalty and the bond.
Tomorrow they go their separate ways and I shall wave them off with a light heart and a warm smile. We take it in turns to open our door and next time I’ll be travelling south. Distance is no object; I’d go to the ends of the earth.
